Hannah Sunderland felt content in her embrace of the Quaker faith …until her twin brother ran off and joined the army and ended up captured and in jail.
With skill and sensitivity, Mitchell tells a story of two unlikely heroes seeking God’s voice, finding the courage to act, and discovering the powerful embrace of love.
I remember reading the back cover copy of this novel many times long before I picked it up.
Once I finished reading it, I sat back in awe of the author’s talent and grace in delivering such a compelling story. I raided my library for every Siri Mitchell book on the shelves and had myself a Siri Mitchell weekend! She is definitely one of my favorite authors now.
This story starts with a bang and doesn’t let up until the very last page. I can hardly find the words to describe how the detail and the details left out grabbed my heart and tugged until I was right there with Hannah and Jeremiah, experiencing the web of secrets that tightened around them until there was literally no going back. The gentle love story — so sweet. The drama of the times (the Revolution is my favorite time period) — fascinating. The ending — perfection.
Years after I finished reading this book on my Kindle, I squealed when I found a paperback copy at the bookstore. I bought it.
If you love historical fiction, history, the Revolution, romances, or books with a strong, gripping inspirational message, you simply must discover the treasure trove of novels that Siri Mitchell has written.
They’ll rip your heart out and put it back together. God’s grace is a major theme and song that sings from each page. I can’t rave about them enough. Now go out and find one to read. =)
About the Author
Siri Mitchell wrote 4 books and accumulated 153 rejections before signing with a publisher. In the process, she saw the bottoms of more pints of Ben & Jerry’s than she cares to admit. At various times she has vowed never to write another word again. Ever. She has gone on writing strikes and even stooped to threatening her manuscripts with the shredder.
Her tenth novel, The Messenger follows prior Bethany House releases: A Constant Heart, Love’s Pursuit, She Walks in Beauty, and A Heart Most Worthy. She Walks in Beauty won the inaugural INSPY Award for Historical Fiction. Three of Siri’s novels, Chateau of Echoes, The Cubicle Next Door, and She Walks in Beauty were Christy Award finalists. Love’s Pursuit was a finalist for the ACFW Carol Award.

I've heard that Revolutionary ones are hard to sell, but I love that era, so I'm glad for the ones that slip through.

You're right about WWII being more popular, Rachel, but have you heard of Anne Mateer's Wings of A Dream? That's WWI!

Siri Mitchell sounds like a familiar name to me….so maybe I've seen a book by her! This one sounds interesting! I do love history and historical fiction, including the Revolutionary War and others such as WWI which I have never found many books about in comparison to WWII!

Thanks for the review of this book!
